“It’s you, it’s all because of you that our family ended up like this, if it weren’t for you, Xiaohan wouldn’t have died!” He was so thin that he almost seemed skeletal, his speech reeked of alcohol as he yelled at Shen Shuci, his eyes slits of fury.

“If it wasn’t for you, our family wouldn’t have become like this…”

“You’re a jinx, we should never have taken you in.”

His words were disjointed, clearly showing his mental instability as he blamed everything recent on Shen Shuci.

“It’s all your fault, all your fault!” Liang Wenzhong howled, raising his other arm and swinging a fist toward her.

But Shen Shuci let go of his restraining hand and raised a foot, Tang Wan watched as his body flew out, hitting the ground on one side, the dull thud accompanied by groans as he curled up, resembling a heap of rotten trash.

She subconsciously reached for her belly, looking away.

Remembering prenatal education, she couldn’t let the child learn such violence.

“Wanwan, are you alright?” Shen Shuci asked, looking at Tang Wan leaning against a stone lion.

“I’m fine,” Tang Wan shook her head. “Should we call the police?”

“Yes,” Shen Shuci nodded. Liang Wenzhong’s vacant and erratic gaze made it clear he was not mentally stable. Failing to call the police could leave her with endless troubles as he might continue to follow her.

“Okay.” Tang Wan took out her cell phone, ready to dial the emergency number.

Liang Wenzhong had been on the verge of collapse recently, having witnessed the rise and fall of his family, ending in ruin under his watch, scorned by all, he had tasted the fickleness of the world, and his mental state had already shattered.

Hearing Tang Wan mention calling the police, he gritted through the intense pain in his abdomen, catching sight of a small knife nearby and crawled up while curling his body.

Shen Shuci was watching him, somewhat helplessly.

He couldn’t really hurt her anyway, why bother!

Liang Wenzhong knew that himself, he just needed a place to vent, so he targeted Shen Shuci.

Shen Shuci knew when to hold back, that kick had hurt fiercely, and yet he was still trying to get up.

And from excessive drinking, he could barely grip the knife, let alone accurately strike her.

Just as Liang Wenzhong got hold of the knife, Tang Wan had dialed the police. “…Yes, I want to report an incident, there’s a man here wielding a knife.”

“Specific location.” The dispatcher was very concerned, as knife crime in broad daylight was extremely severe.

“Liang Wenzhong…” Shen Shuci tried to dissuade him from advancing. If he charged again, he would only get beaten.

But he was already in a frenzy, holding the knife and lunging forward; just then, a figure suddenly darted from the side, stepping in front of Shen Shuci, the knife sliding across her forearm, cutting her clothes.

Shen Shuci was shocked by the appearance of a bystander, quickly shielding her.

Her heart skipped a beat.

Everything had been under her control, but she hadn’t expected a young girl to intervene.

Tang Wan frowned, equally surprised by the brave act of the bystander.

“Are you okay? Nothing wrong, right?”

“I’m fine.” A woman in her early twenties, pleasantly delicate.

Shen Shuci hurriedly checked her arm, thankfully, there was no injury.

The knife had moved from her arm to her abdomen, but fortunately it only tore her clothes.

Liang Wenzhong, already mentally disturbed, thinking he had injured her, was gasping heavily. He hadn’t done such a thing before, and after an initial bout of terror, a wild ferocity and madness took over.

“Shen Shuci, Shen Shuci—” he muttered her name, gripping the knife tightly.

“You’re sure you’re okay, right?” Shen Shuci calmed the bystander.

“I’m fine.” Though it was a heroic act, her face was pale, clearly frightened.

“Come over here.” Tang Wan pulled her to her side, still on the phone with the police who were trying to ascertain their location amidst some commotion. She could only give a rough indication.

“Where in the suburbs?”

“I…” Tang Wan frowned; if she knew the exact direction, she wouldn’t have been wandering around with Shen Shuci for so long.

Shen Shuci was also getting frustrated, handing Tang Wan her bag. She was wearing a trench coat and loosened her belt as Liang Wenzhong charged, ready to defend…

But the next second…

“Thud—” Liang Wenzhong’s body stiffened, his whole body numb with pain.

Tang Wan caught a glimpse of a woman standing with one hand extended.
