The weather is getting hotter, and Cheng Su is busy packing some necessary things from the house to prepare for transportation to Guangcheng. There are hardly any clothes among them, which Mother Cheng finds curious. She asks a question and learns that Cheng Su plans to give most of her clothes away and won’t be taking them to Guangcheng, hence not much packing is involved.

”Why is that? Why are perfectly good clothes being given away?” Mother Cheng is shocked.

Cheng Su laughs, ”These are styles from a few years ago, and they’re not really fashionable anymore. Besides, what doesn’t Guangcheng have? I can just buy new ones there!” Does she lack money for a couple of pieces of clothing?

Mother Cheng calls out to the heavens several times, pointing at her and scolding her for being a spendthrift. Those clothes, in her eyes, are not worn out or torn; some are even quite new, seemingly worn only a few times, yet she says she doesn’t want them?

This girl is so wasteful—is money blowing in from the wind?

Not to mention that the clothes Cheng Su bought were quite expensive, and now she’s giving them away; it breaks Mother Cheng’s heart.

Mother Cheng also laughs, saying: ”You young people have never suffered. Back in our days, forget new clothes—just having old ones was...”

This is another tale of hardship from the past, and Cheng Su quickly intercepts: ”Mom, I’m hungry. Is your pumpkin pancake ready? Fry a couple for us to taste.” Saying this, she winks at Fei Yin.

Fei Yin, understanding the message, also says, ”Yeah, Auntie, I’m a bit hungry too!”

Cheng Su says to Fei Yin, ”Don’t mind us!”

”No worries, the older generation is usually like this. But Auntie is right—not just in their era, but even when we were kids, didn’t we wear patched clothes?” Fei Yin says.

Cheng Su raises an eyebrow: ”You didn’t really wear patched clothes, did you?” She heard that her family background was quite decent.

”Just a metaphor,” Fei Yin sticks out her tongue and sighs, ”But in reality, life has gotten better now, unlike the tough times before. It’s a different era!”

”Thank the national leaders—they opened up reforms that lifted us out of poverty and helped us live better lives.” Cheng Su laughs.

”Indeed!”

The two chat away, and they find themselves in agreement on many topics, feeling increasingly in tune with each other.

”Come, have some pumpkin pancakes!” Mother Cheng comes out with a plate of golden pumpkin pancakes.

The group picks up chopsticks one after another, and suddenly there’s a knock on the door. Mother Cheng goes to open the door, and outside is Deng Weixia’s family of three.
