“Grandma and Grandpa, we’re back. What are you two up to?” Qin Xue asked the elderly couple.

“Well, the New Year is coming, and we can’t have you eat snacks without any substance. Your mother bought some sugar, and asked us to shell some peanuts to make peanut brittle for you two sisters. We’re also going to fry some rice, so we started shelling the peanuts as soon as we had some free time.” The grandmother responded cheerfully when she heard her granddaughter’s question.

“Oh, so you really are making candy. That’s delicious, so fragrant and sweet.” Qin Xue was delighted to hear that they were making just what she was thinking of. Now she would not have to buy more, and they could add any additional ingredients they wanted. She was thrilled at the idea.

“Indeed, your mom said you rarely come home and this is your favorite snack. We didn’t have money to buy it for you before, but now that we’ve made some money from our business, we thought we should make it for you.” Mrs. Qin was also aware that life had been quite tough for the family over the years.

All of this hardship was because of the cost of educating the three children. However, once the children had their education, wouldn’t they be more successful than those of other families?

She only saw her classmates eating them, so she wanted to try it herself. She does get some allowance, but thinking about her parents’ hardships, she can’t bring herself to spend it on snacks.

So she’s never had those so-called shrimp crackers before, but how could she not be happy when her sister said she would make them?

“Making those things does require a lot of oil, and most families are not willing to make them. But if you girls want to eat them now, go ahead and make them.” Grandpa Qin was aware of the past hardships, but now their son-in-law was at home, so they could afford it.

“Great! Sister, how much rice do we need to soak?” Qin Jiale eagerly asked Qin Xue.

“1.5 kg should be enough. If we make too much and can’t finish it, it won’t taste as good if we leave it till the next day.” Qin Xue’s measurements also took into account the portion for their uncle and his wife. Since this was a rare treat, any extra would be given to the closest relatives.

Chu Molin had no objections. Grinding 1.5 kg of rice into flour wouldn’t take too long, so he was not worried about not being able to produce it.

“Okay, by the way, how come Xue Ling hasn’t woken up yet? It’s noon already. She’s really taking her time sleeping.” Qin Jiale asked her sister. She hadn’t thought much of Xue Ling not getting up for breakfast, but by now it was noon and surely she would have had enough sleep? She was nowhere to be seen.
