Capítulo 755: 464 Confessing my heart on a rainy night, let’s give it a try (2 more updates)

In the dead of a rainy night, the miserable wind carried the bitter rain, chilling to the bone.

Shen Shuci had been extremely cautious all the way, fearing she might disturb the Jiang Family. When she arrived at the door, under the dim streetlight at the corner, Huo Qinqi stood with a black umbrella, his whole being enveloped in a haze of smoke.

The light was very dim, and obscured by the umbrella, Shen Shuci could only see the glowing cigarette butt in his hand and the indistinct profile of his face.

This was her first time seeing Huo Qinqi smoke.

He noticed her out of the corner of his eye and only then did he raise his hand to extinguish the cigarette butt, his actions as decisive and brusque as ever.

As she approached, aside from the smell of rainwater, she could clearly smell the faint scent of tobacco on him.

“Why did you come down wearing so little?” his voice hoarse, “Get in the car first.”

The rain was not light, and it was not suitable to talk outside, so Shen Shuci got in the car with him. Tonight, he had driven himself here, and in the confined space of the car, it was only the two of them.

He turned on the heater and observed her from the corner of his eye. The door on the passenger side was half-open as Shen Shuci attempted to shake off the rain clinging to the umbrella.

“Close the door,” Huo Qinqi frowned.

“The umbrella is wet…”

“You’ll catch a cold.”

Whether the rainwater would wet the inside of the car clearly didn’t concern Huo Qinqi. He casually threw the umbrella in the back, quieting the space inside the car instantly.

It was inevitable that Shen Shuci’s clothes and pant legs were damp. She looked down to straighten her clothes as Huo Qinqi handed her a thermal container.

“Hmm?” Shen Shuci’s expression was dubious as she took it from his hand and opened it to look.

Braised fish…

Even with insulation, it must not be very hot by now.

“You came all this way in the middle of the night just to bring me this?” Shen Shuci held the thermal container, feeling an indescribable sensation in her heart.

“Don’t like it?”

Huo Qinqi, being a very observant person, had dined with Shen Shuci a few times but still found it difficult to determine what she liked. She wasn’t picky eater and didn’t seem to have any particular preferences.

Apart from horseback riding and cats, did she scarcely show what she liked?

“I really like it,” Shen Shuci bit her lip.

“What else do you like?” Huo Qinqi, blunt as always, asked directly when he couldn’t figure it out by observation.

I…

Like what?

She could no longer remember what she liked.

Shen Shuci’s thoughts drifted to the past, the first time she went to the Liang Family, the first time she was adopted. The Liang Family’s mansion was luxurious, a stark contrast to the orphanage. She had her own room, they even had servants, beautiful clothes, fancy hairpins—who wouldn’t like that?

But after moving to the Shen Family, she didn’t dare to like anything anymore.

The senior members of Shen Family were naturally very good to her, the better they treated her, the more cautious she became!

She was well aware of her status; she wasn’t the biological daughter of the senior couple. Everything she had was “stolen,” and perhaps at that time, she was just a substitute for the daughter they’d lost. She couldn’t be cast out again.

She had to be well-behaved, try hard to be sensible. She couldn’t even let them notice she’d once been adopted.

Shen Shuci understood better than anyone…

How carefully, how hard she had to try to avoid being abandoned.

The Shen Family’s senior members and the Tang Family treated her exceptionally well; at the orphanage, her clothes were mostly donations, new and old, but rarely fitting. She was a year younger and a head shorter than Tang Wan, but she could wear her old clothes. However, as soon as she arrived at the Shen Family, the old lady bought her many new clothes.

What Tang Wan had, she had as well.

She knew everything was “stolen,” if Tang Wan’s mother hadn’t left, how could it have been her turn.

In her first year with the Shen Family, she lived each day with extreme caution, like treading on thin ice…

She vividly remembered the day she returned home from school to find the old lady sorting things in her room!

At that moment, she was completely devastated…

“Shuci, look around this room, whatever you like, I’ll have it installed for you.”

Standing there, she didn’t dare speak or ask more.
