“Seeing you head to the ward, someone heated it up; it definitely wouldn’t taste as good as when it’s freshly made,” Jiang Jinsang appeared at the office door, “You didn’t eat at noon; you must be quite hungry.”

The surgery was ongoing, high-pressure, and tense; there was no time to eat.

“You’re still somewhat conscientious,” Zhou Zhongqing laughed, “Oh, it’s actually my favorite, tomato and egg stir-fry.”

Jiang Jinsang poured him a glass of water and handed it over, “Uncle Zhou, thank you.”

With extraordinary solemnity.

Their relationship, rather than simply being that of a patient and doctor, was perhaps even closer. To say it was like father and son wouldn’t be an overstatement.

“Alright, take good care of the old man. The surgery went very smoothly. He’ll recover well and should definitely be able to leave the hospital before the New Year.”

…

The old man’s surgery was successful, the huge burden that had been weighing on the Tang father and daughter’s hearts was finally lifted.

Just as Jiang Jinsang was about to leave, Tang Yunxian came in, probably to thank Zhou Zhongqing, stayed in the office a bit longer with him, before they both left.

“You’re still thinking of buying food for Doctor Zhou, I’ve been so anxious, I couldn’t focus on these things,” Tang Yunxian said with a helpless smile, “Let’s go outside, have something to eat, and pack something to take back up for Wanwan and the others.”

Everyone had been waiting outside the ward the whole day and had hardly eaten anything.

“Hmm,” Jiang Jinsang nodded.

Tang Yunxian couldn’t eat much; Jiang Jinsang paid for the packed meals and then stood beside a trash bin under a tree, smoking a cigarette. It was apparent he was under a lot of pressure lately.

The company was in Pingjiang, yet his father was hospitalized in Beijing, consecutive days of vigil were bound to be draining.

“Uncle Tang, it’s ready,” Jiang Jinsang said, coming out with the meal box. Tang Yunxian saw him and put out his cigarette.

“These recent times have been quite troubling for you as well, with Wanwan keeping watch at night, and you coming along.”

“It’s what I should do.”

“Uncle knows, you really are a good kid.”

Jiang Jinsang slightly furrowed his brow; was he inexplicably handing out a ‘good person card’?

That didn’t seem like a good sign, because usually after giving out a ‘good person card,’ what came next was a stab in the back!

“That business of the trial marriage, it was all fabricated by our old man. He just liked you too much, and that’s why he made up the illness and staged this whole scene, and you were even willing to go along with it.”

“I wasn’t just going along…” Jiang Jinsang had already agreed with Tang Wan to give it a serious try, “I was willing to do this all along.”

“Don’t say things to console me; I know all about it,” Tang Yunxian said with a smile.

Jiang Jinsang pursed his lips:

What else did he know about?

“I know, these times have been tough for you, being so busy back and forth.”

“To go along with our play-acting, you’ve been running around when you’re not in the best shape. It hasn’t been easy.”

“It was all just to ensure the old man would go through with the surgery. Now that the operation is done, this affair should also be coming to an end…”

Jiang Jinsang gripped the takeout bag tightly, “Uncle Tang?”

“You don’t need to worry about this. I will talk to my father personally; I won’t make it difficult for you. You’ve already sacrificed enough!”

“Uncle, actually Wanwan and I…”

Jiang Jinsang was just about to explain when Tang Yunxian’s phone vibrated, “Sorry, I have to take this call…”

“No problem, you go ahead.”

“Hey, old Teng, yes, my dad’s surgery is over, it went very well… Sure, when we return to Pingjiang, let’s drink together…”

Jiang Jinsang knew Tang Yunxian still thought he and Tang Wan were only pretending, and he definitely needed to clear this up. But he hadn’t expected that right after the old man had been wheeled out of the surgery room, they’d start dismantling the bridge after crossing the river…

They weren’t even as quick when knocking down a measuring mound or killing the donkey after grinding the grain.
