Doomsday Wonderland

Lin Sanjiu thinks she's landed a good one, a husband material to be exact, Ren Nan is rich, good-looking, and never gives her a reason to complain, so she moves into his penthouse without much hesitation. It's small things that start bugging her after that, he never sweats, never coughs, doesn't sneeze even when the dust in the apartment is bad enough to make her eyes water, and there's something about the way he acts once the sun goes down that makes her want to keep the bedroom door unlocked, just in case. She almost talks herself out of it, tells herself she's imagining things, until a heatwave hits the city hard enough to break records and the power grid just gives out completely, and that's when Ren Nan finally tells her the truth, he's not human, and this heatwave isn't weather, it's the start of something that's already changing who survives and who doesn't.Turns out she's changing too. Her senses sharpen, the heat stops bothering her the way it should, and somewhere in all of it she picks up an ability to store objects like they're cards in a deck, tucked away and pulled out when she needs them. She doesn't sit around figuring out what she can do though, she thinks about her friend Zhu Mei immediately, because if Sanjiu's this disoriented by the change, someone with zero warning has even less of a shot.Getting across the city is its own fight, people packed into parked cars just for the shade, everyone looking half-feral from the heat, and when she finally gets to Zhu Mei's building, the person waiting for her isn't Zhu Mei at all. "You're not who I came here for," she says, and that's when she realizes Ren Nan wasn't the only one keeping something from her.
