By 2138 most people log into YGGDRASIL just to get away from a life that's gone gray, dirty air, cramped cities, jobs that run you on a schedule instead of a purpose, and for over a decade that game has been the one place where building something with your own hands still meant something, guilds raising castles out of nothing, players stacking together the weirdest race and class combos just to see if they'd work.So when the shutdown notice finally hits, most people take it the way you'd expect, logging in one last night to wander old places and say goodbye to guildmates before the countdown runs out. One player does it differently though, he skips the goodbye parties in the main square and just sits in his guild's tomb instead, the one they spent years building together, because that's the place that actually meant something to him, more than the real apartment waiting for him outside.When the clock hits zero, nothing logs him out. The tomb's still there, quiet in a way that doesn't feel like a loading screen, and the NPCs who used to just recite their lines start answering him like they've got something going on behind their eyes that wasn't in the code before.Outside those walls the world still runs on the game's old rules, power still works the way it used to, except now there's hunger out there, and fear, and people making decisions with consequences a patch note was never built to explain, and he's left sitting with the one question none of his years playing ever prepared him to answer, what he's supposed to become now that none of this is a game anymore.
