In the end, Wei Zilin quickly intercepted and grabbed ahold of her hand.

“My hand’s covered in filth. It’s dirty,” Xu Moyan said. However, he was already holding on to it, so it would not make sense if she were to shove it away. Thus, she decided to let it be.

“I don’t mind.” Wei Zilin held on tighter, interlocking his fingers with hers.

Her hands that were somewhat cold from the morning chill gradually warmed up after being held by his for a short while.

Looking at his unbothered expression, Xu Moyan blinked slyly and covered the back of his hand with her other hand. She deliberately rubbed it a couple of few times, smearing the majority of the dirt on her hand onto the back of Wei Zilin’s hand.

Wei Zilin had quite a high tolerance for Xu Moyan’s antics, so he simply continued to smile as he watched her becoming increasingly boisterous. It was as if she had suddenly turned into a three-year-old child.

Wei Zilin lifted her hand up and wanted to give it a kiss. However, once he got close to it, he asked curiously, “What’s that smell?”

Xu Moyan heard him and lowered her head to smell it. Then, she blushed and became a little embarrassed. “Why… does it smell?”

Old Master Wei, who was opening the door and was about to enter the house, paused and turned around after chuckling twice. Then, he replied, “That’s because I’d normally pour natural fertilizer over the ground.”

After he said, he entered the house with his hands behind his back.

Xu Moyan and Wei Zilin both froze with a confused expression on their faces.

Natural fertilizer… Did he mean manure?

Almost immediately, Xu Moyan became apologetic and said, “I’m so sorry, I didn’t know.”

When she tried to loosen up her grip, she found that Wei Zilin was still holding onto it tightly. “It’s fine. It’s already smeared all over anyway.”

He paused for a while before asking, “Weren’t you wearing gloves?”

“When I was pulling out the vegetables, I didn’t feel comfortable wearing the gloves. I’m afraid that I couldn’t correctly estimate the force I was using and might damage the vegetables, so I took the gloves off.” Xu Moyan explained as she tried to weep, but failed to shed a tear. “Grandpa is really something. He didn’t even try to warn me.”

“Now that you know who’s the nicest to you. Think about it the next time you help that old man bully me.” Wei Zilin said complacently.

Xu Moyan, “…”

The two then went to the washroom and repeatedly tried to wash the dirt off. Fortunately, Xu Moyan’s main job was to pick vegetables, so she did not touch the soil much. Therefore, the pungent smell was not too strong.

It was probably just due to her imagination, but she kept thinking it was still there. Therefore, she needed to scrub at it several more times before she finally felt that it was clean enough.

When they finished washing up, they found that the aunty had only just prepared for breakfast. There were store-bought fried dough sticks and stuffed cakes on the table, whilst the congee was homemade.

Jian Muhua was from G City and had been in B City for many years. She would occasionally miss the food in G City, so Old Master Wei had found an aunty from G City who was particularly good at cooking soup and congee. The congee she cooked up this morning was the famous Sampan congee in G City. It was a troublesome dish to prepare, and they had no idea what time the aunty had to wake up just to cook it.

Dried scallops were added to the water beforehand, after which, soft and thick glutinous rice was mixed in alongside slices of fish meat. The fish fillets were from grass carp, and the fishbones were carefully discarded before it was cooked. The grass carp fillets were soaked with salt, cooking wine, and peppercorns to rid of the fishy odor. Once the white and tender flesh was mixed with the white rice, it would be hard to tell them apart, turning the congee into a thick and white milky soup consistency. The peanuts were fried to a crisp, and the fried dough sticks were cut into smaller pieces before being re-fried so that it would turn crispy inside and out. Because of this, it would not soften up quickly even after being soaked in congee. Thus, it would float on the surface of the congee along with the peanuts and fragrant chives.
