Gu Yang found the behavior of the butler and Tong Rao a bit odd.

Even though Tong Jiayin had been taken away by Lin Ran and his team, Tong Rao showed no visible concern. Gu Yang had visited the Tong family a few times before and had noticed that, while Tong Rao wasn’t as emotionally close to Tong Jiayin as some mothers might be, she still clearly cared for and indulged her daughter. Tong Rao’s indifference was unexpected.

Feng Jue accompanied Gu Yang upstairs but was stopped by the butler before he could enter the room.

“The Family Head has only permitted Miss Gu Yang to enter the bedroom,” the butler explained.

Respecting the boundaries, Feng Jue didn’t insist. Instead, he turned to Gu Yang and said, “Sister, remember that you have my full support. Don’t feel pressured to compromise for anyone.”

“I’ll stay right outside the door,” he added. “If you need anything, just call, and I’ll be there immediately.”

Despite her sister’s formidable skills as a hypnotist, Tong Rao was the head of the Tong family and known for her intelligence and cunning. Gu Yang knew she needed to be cautious.

Gu Yang nodded.

Outside the window, rain mixed with snow, and dark clouds seemed to press heavily against the tall buildings. The dim light of the weather cast a somber tone in Tong Rao’s bedroom, where warm lights provided a comforting glow.

Tong Rao was propped up against the headboard, her hands resting on her temples. At the sound of footsteps, she opened her eyes and regarded Gu Yang with a brief flash of complexity before her expression settled back into its usual calm.

Before Gu Yang could speak, Tong Rao preempted her. “I’m aware of Jiayin’s situation. She was simply momentarily confused.”

Gu Yang wasn’t taken aback by Tong Rao’s response. She moved a chair closer and took a seat, showing no fear of the intimidating presence Tong Rao held as the head of an aristocratic family. “So, you’re planning to protect both your daughter and your son?”

Her tone remained gentle, but the underlying threat was unmistakable.

Tong Rao’s brow furrowed in irritation, though it was clear her anger was directed not at Gu Yang but at Tong Sinian. “And Sinian was involved as well?”

She gazed at Gu Yang with a look of mixed emotions. “Are you not willing to resolve this matter privately?”

Gu Yang smiled and said, “I’m afraid Family Head Tong can’t afford the price.”

Her demeanor was calm, but she wasn’t about to be taken advantage of. If someone wanted to kill her, she wouldn’t just let them walk away without consequence. And it wasn’t just her own opinion; her family, which was on the brink of corruption, wouldn’t stand for it either.

Tong Rao narrowed her eyes. “And what price might that be?”

Having held a high position for many years, Tong Rao was used to being respected and feared by her juniors, including her own children. This was the first time someone had spoken so boldly in her presence.

Instead of being angered, she felt a begrudging admiration. Gu Yang reminded her of her younger self—youthful and full of vigor. Yet, unlike Tong Rao, Gu Yang’s sharpness was masked by a veneer of gentleness, radiating the refined aura of an aristocratic family’s daughter.

Tong Rao gazed at Gu Yang with a look of confusion.

Gu Yang reclined in her chair, seemingly lost in thought. Then, she broke into a smile, her tone as casual as if discussing the weather. “How about the Tong Family?”

If the Tong family was intent on protecting Tong Sinian and Tong Jiayin, who had plotted against her, and she refused to back down, it would mean making enemies with the entire Tong family. If neither side was willing to concede, it would be a fight to the end.

Gu Yang had expected Tong Rao to be enraged; after all, her words were a direct affront to the dignity of a wealthy family’s head. However, Tong Rao’s reaction was unexpected.

Raising her brows, Tong Rao regarded Gu Yang thoughtfully. “You want the Tong Family? That’s not out of the question.”

Gu Yang was taken aback.

What was going on with Tong Rao?

Why wasn’t she following the expected script?

Gu Yang was accustomed to having the upper hand in her interactions with Tong Rao, almost as if she had the upper hand in their dynamic. It was rare to see Tong Rao’s reaction, and it intrigued her.
