Peasant Woman’s Decreed Life as a Wife

Chapter 1226: Chapter 123: Suicide Out of Fear of Punishment

“There is no need.” Chu Heng, with his hands clasped behind his back, glanced at him only once, “Bring over the medicinal herbs that Doctor Liu brought with him.”

At the same time, an old doctor came out.

“Your humble servant has seen Lord Chu.”

“Imperial Physician Zhao, you have worked hard.” Chu Heng stepped forward, extended his hand to help the elder up, “Thank you for your efforts.”

He took a step back, yielding his place for Imperial Physician Zhao to examine the properties of the medicine in the water.

And Zhang Ahai, following orders, also brought over the medicinal herbs carried by Doctor Liu as well as his personal belongings.

This move caught the cook and Doctor Liu completely off guard, their heartbeats thundering, and by the time they saw Imperial Physician Zhao, they had already lost all hope.

Suddenly, Zhang Ahai bellowed, “They’re trying to commit suicide!”

As he stepped forward, he grabbed Doctor Liu’s jaw, trying to save him, only to see fresh blood streaming from the corners of Doctor Liu’s mouth, his eyes wide open, already dead with eyes unshut.

Meanwhile, the cook was a step too slow and was prevented from killing himself.

Taken away for interrogation by Chu Heng’s orders alone.

Imperial Physician Zhao had also finished examining the sachet, “This sachet has been constantly soaked in poisonous water, then dried in the air, and after adding strongly-scented mosquito-repelling medicinal herbs inside, it’s nearly impossible to detect the original scent of the sachet itself.”

“Lord Chu, meticulous as hair, detecting such a spy, there might still be other spies mixed within the army, you should thoroughly inspect once more,” he said.

“Thank you, Imperial Physician Zhao.” Chu Heng bowed in gratitude, then arranged for the personal belongings to be checked again.

Three more were discovered.

With Imperial Physician Zhao present, the three who had originally fallen ill drank the medicine and were left behind at the post station after stopping there.

And the spies that had been caught before were all disposed of cleanly.

Afterwards, no one else fell ill in the troop, and the somewhat unstable morale of the army slowly settled down.

Capital.

Ye Muyu had just received a letter from Chu Heng, she read it through, and sure enough, it was all good news and no bad, only saying that he had successfully entered the Northern Region and was five or six days’ journey from the Border Pass.

She pursed her lips tightly, then picked up another letter from the desk, which mentioned specifics, including the times Chu Heng arrived at the post stations and the incidents of soldiers falling ill.

When she saw the cause of the illness, she breathed a sigh of relief, Ah Heng, before leaving, she had Lu Sangqi add medical prescriptions for treating serious diseases as well as a bottle of pills into it.

She had then thought that if there were not enough medicinal herbs and someone really fell ill, the pills could be used in an urgent situation, and once they reached a town, they could use the prescriptions to get the proper treatment.

Although it was somewhat risky, it fortunately solved the problem.

However, why had the people at the post station said that the soldiers Ah Heng left behind were continually unwell and could only stay for treatment?

Furthermore, some soldiers hadn’t been sent to the post station, but were instead sent to nearby towns.

Having read the letter, Ye Muyu burned it, pondering in her heart that something must have happened, otherwise Chu Heng wouldn’t have failed to use the medicine.

Yet she was not sure whether it was a strategy of Ah Heng’s.

She spoke out, calling Su Mei to come in, “Has there been any news from Tang Beauty?”

“Lady, there has not been,” Su Mei replied, seeing the worry on her face, clearly concerned for the master, she comforted her, “Lady, the master is wise and astute, nothing will happen to him.”

“It’s the order you gave for the purchase of the grains. Most have already been bought and stored in the warehouse, just waiting to be transported.”

“Is there any letter from Young Master Du or Shopkeeper Tang?” Ye Muyu knew that worrying was pointless, so she had to make preparations well in advance.
