Shu Yu sat in the restaurant for about an hour before leaving, and before leaving, she packed some desserts.

As she walked out of the restaurant, she glanced again at the beggar in the corner, shook her head, sighed, and said, “What a pity.”

The staff who saw her off sighed along, “Yes, it’s rare to meet a kind person like the young lady today, who gave so much in reward. At least he’ll have a good meal.”

The shopkeeper said the young lady only had a maid with her, and it seemed like the maid’s hometown was in Tianning County. As soon as they arrived at the inn, the maid had gone outside the city to pay respects to her late father.

The young lady was very generous. She gave money for buying incense and paper money. After the maid left, she went out shopping.

The gray-clad man nodded at these words and left the inn, winding through the streets back to the restaurant where Shu Yu had eaten her desserts. He told the shopkeeper, “I’ve asked around. The young lady indeed had her personal maid return to pay respects to her late father. The maid has gone out of the city and hasn’t returned yet, but they’re supposed to leave Tianning County early tomorrow morning.”

The shopkeeper nodded, “That matches what she said earlier. Keep an eye on them to see if they leave tomorrow morning.”

“Yes.”

The gray-clad man returned to the outside of the inn and crouched in the corner, watching the entrance.

As it was getting dark, Ying Xi returned driving the carriage.

Her eyes were a bit swollen, but she was in good spirits.

Soon after she entered the inn, she and Shu Yu came out again.

The two of them found a place to eat, and after eating, bought a few more things before returning to the inn to rest.

At dawn the next day, Shu Yu and Ying Xi packed up their belongings and loaded them onto the carriage. They checked out at the counter and drove the carriage straight to the city gate.

After watching them leave the city gates and not return for a long time, the gray-clad man yawned, returned to the restaurant on South Five Street, and quietly said to the shopkeeper, “They left at daybreak.”

The shopkeeper nodded, “Seems like they were just passing through, unrelated to Meng Pei.”

The shopkeeper glanced emotionlessly at the old beggar at the door and continued working.
