Rebirth: Splendid Marriage in the 80s

Chapter 2285: Chapter 2221: I’m Just a Passerby

Watching her like this, smiling in front of him, playing around in front of him, being so close he could hug her if he just reached out, and kiss her if he leaned in—how wonderful.

He had resigned himself to his fate. To love a woman to this extent, to the point that being apart for just a few days felt unbearable, was something he figured he’d experience again and again in this lifetime.

Chiang Xiao snuggled in his embrace, biting her lip with a light smile.

The two of them leaned into each other, gazing at the sunset-lit sky. For once, they felt peaceful and warm inside, completely forgetting about the past bitterness and sadness.

”Ahem!”

A figure slowly stood up from behind a row of bean plants next door.

Chiang Xiao was startled.

What? Someone on the rooftop next door?

Were her ears broken? She hadn’t heard a single sound just now!

”These old legs of mine are going numb from squatting.” A voice, filled with a hint of laughter, rang out. It sounded like an elderly person.

”But, luckily I caught the thief. Last time I had a tomato that finally ripened, I was waiting to make candied fruit with it, the old man loves that sweet and sour taste, but then in a blink, it was gone.”

Chiang Xiao suddenly looked at Meng Xinian, her eyes widening.

Heh heh, Tyrant Meng, you’re done for! You got caught stealing tomatoes!

She found it suddenly funny and quickly pushed him away, jumping a few steps back. ”I don’t know you!”

Meng Xinian’s face was instantly lined with black streaks.

He glanced at Chiang Xiao and turned to the old man with a cough.

The man was a lean elder over sixty, but his eyes were bright, holding two strips of melon while looking at Meng Xinian.

There had been a half-height red brick wall between them; for the old man it would be hard to climb, but for Meng Xinian, he could flip over it in the blink of an eye.

”Old Yang.”

Meng Xinian called out, and Chiang Xiao guessed that this must be Yang Zhiqi’s father?

Back then, Yang Zhiqi had followed Old Meng, but it was said that his father was also quite a character. There had been some misunderstanding between the father and son, and that was why Yang Zhiqi left with Old Meng in a huff.

Now that she looked, Yang Zhiqi did indeed resemble the elder standing before her.

”Young Meng,” Old Yang said, then looked at Chiang Xiao, ”is this your wife?”

Chiang Xiao quickly shook her head and waved her hands, ”No, no, I have nothing to do with him. I’m just a passerby, a complete stranger! Old man, don’t mind me, settle accounts with him.”

Meng Xinian: ”...”

Who said this girl had calmed down? Clearly, she’s still holding a grudge.

Isn’t this what they call, even married birds will fly their separate ways in the face of disaster?

Agh, spit, spit, spit.

If this girl dares to fly, he’ll just have to chase after her.

Meng Xinian’s glanced askance at Chiang Xiao carried a hint of danger she could catch.

Ha, Tyrant Meng is definitely not thinking good thoughts right now.

Old Yang looked at Chiang Xiao, then at Meng Xinian, and suddenly laughed, quite enjoying their predicament. ”I heard young Meng here was finally tamed. I didn’t believe it at the time, but now it seems to be true. Come, come, young lady, want to come to this old man’s place and have some fruit? These little apples from my hometown are so sweet.”

”Old Yang, I just took one of your tomatoes, you don’t have to kidnap my wife too, do you?” Meng Xinian’s face turned dark.

His wife had come all this way to see him; preferably, they would stay glued together with no one playing third wheel.

If Old Yang took her away, who knows when she’d come back.

Old Yang chuckled, ”The girl clearly says she has nothing to do with you.”
